Squares on a Page

kunk_kate_socialHave you checked your caregiver calendar for August?  Hopefully it’s packed with fun things in addition to the routine appointments, paperwork and tasks. If you’re having trouble seeing anything fun (or funny) in the squares on your calendar, perhaps a few suggestions are in order.  There seems to be a plethora of “national” celebration days for the whole month. Why not consider adding a couple of them to your calendar for some variety?

Sneak a Zucchini onto a Neighbor’s Porch

cox_tiffany_socialAnyone who’s grown zucchini knows that a healthy plant can produce an overwhelming number of zucchini. Most gardeners love to share their bounty, which is how the national Sneak a Zucchini onto Your Neighbor’s Porch Day came to be. The unusual “holiday,” was established by a Pennsylvania citizen who encouraged those who over zealously planted zucchini in their gardens to drop baskets of them off on their neighbors’ porches.

Volunteers Needed to Keep Seniors Safe

Approximately 150 adult volunteers of all skill levels are needed on Saturday, Sept. 24, for CICOA’s Safe at Home Day, sponsored by United Home Healthcare. The 7th annual event is a high-impact, half-day of service to older, low-income homeowners to reduce the likelihood of falls. The event coincides with National Fall Prevention Awareness Week.

Each year, one in three adults age 65 and older falls. Nearly 30 percent of people who fall suffer moderate to severe injuries, such as lacerations, hip fractures or head trauma, making it difficult to continue living independently. The average cost for treatment of the resulting injuries is $19,000.

CICOA to make changes to home meal program

CICOA Aging & In-Home Solutions is making a change to its long-time Meals & More service, which provides approximately 1,200 meals, five days a week to homebound seniors throughout Central Indiana. Instead, CICOA will switch to a more cost-efficient and effective fresh frozen meal option delivered biweekly.

The new program will continue to provide nutritionally balanced meals and give seniors more choices in the meals they receive, while making the program more sustainable.

CICOA’s home-delivered meal service in Hamilton, Hancock and Hendricks counties, which is contracted through Meals on Wheels, is unaffected.
