The Person at the Center

Orion Bell Square HeadshotPerson-centered thinking is an important concept for the staff at CICOA. Our mission brings us into the lives of many vulnerable Hoosiers who may struggle to maintain their health, their dignity and their independence. As a social services agency, we do not practice medicine, operate a clinic, or dispense medications. But our supports help individuals to access these services and to follow through on the care plans designed to help them enjoy a better quality of life.

Senior Finances…More than Meets the Eye

kunk_kate_socialYour loved one might not need help with financial and other business matters today, but there might never be a better time than the present to begin conversations about his/her wishes for the future and their financial feasibility.  If you meet with resistance, assure your loved one that your goal is to ensure his/her wishes can be honored in the future and only in the event that he/she cannot make those wishes known.

Four Tips to Help You Lose Weight in 2017

Here’s what you really need to know: Diets don’t work.  Sure, maybe you’ll drop a few pounds in the beginning, but fad diets aren’t a healthy way to lose weight.

Instead of falling for the new quick-fix diet, I want to give you four tips to help you not only lose weight, but also increase your energy level and feel better.

The Glue That Held our Family Together

“Glue.” That’s the word one family used to describe the Comfort Keepers’ caregiver who attended their mother during her last days.

Comfort Keepers is a leading provider of in-home care services, including skilled nursing, home health aide, personal care attendant, and companionship/homemaker services. Tim Paul, owner of the Comfort Keepers franchise in Central Indiana, described the hospice situation.

“Our caregiver went to the client’s home for an introduction, and the family loved her immediately. But they asked for a split shift, requiring the caregiver to work a half-day each morning and return in the evening for several additional hours. The caregiver went there 27 straight days and never missed a day, never missed a shift,” Paul said.

In fact, the caregiver was holding the client’s hand when she died.

Free Seminars Help Seniors Get the Most of Their Medicare

The vast majority of Medicare beneficiaries in Indiana do not take full advantage of their pharmacy coverage, which can negatively impact their physical and financial health. To help raise awareness of this issue, CICOA Aging & In-Home Solutions and Walgreens are collaborating on a public education campaign during Pharmacy Benefits Week, observed nationally Jan. 30-Feb. 3, 2017.

Research shows that only 12 percent of Medicare beneficiaries understand their pharmacy benefits and, therefore, are able to make the most of the potential savings. Without an understanding of their benefits, too many older adults and people with disabilities may not be taking medications as prescribed for fear of incurring additional out-of-pocket expenses.
