CICOA Awarded $27,000 Grant to Support Home Safety for Homebound Veterans

Written by

CICOA Aging & In-Home Solutions has received a $27,000 grant through the Helping Homebound Heroes Program for a third year in a row. This program is a national initiative led by The Home Depot Foundation in partnership with Meals on Wheels America that supports critical home safety and accessibility modifications for homebound veterans in Central Indiana.

The funding will allow CICOA’s Home Safety and Accessibility Program to complete essential repairs and modifications that help veteran clients live more safely and independently in their own homes. Improvements may include the installation of grab bars and handrails, accessibility enhancements, minor repairs, and other fall-prevention measures that address mobility and safety challenges.

“Many of the veterans we serve want to age safely at home but face physical barriers that make everyday tasks difficult and dangerous,” said Lisa Schneekloth, President and CEO of CICOA. “Support through the Helping Homebound Heroes Program allows us to honor their service by making their homes safer, more accessible, and better suited to their needs.”

The Helping Homebound Heroes Program supports organizations nationwide that serve aging and homebound veterans, focusing on home repairs and modifications that reduce fall risk, promote independence, and prevent unnecessary institutionalization.

“With more than nine million veteran homeowners over the age of 55, there is a growing need for critical home repairs and modifications, which have proven positive effects on health and quality of life,” said Ellie Hollander, President and CEO of Meals on Wheels America. “Thanks to The Home Depot Foundation’s increased support, more Meals on Wheels programs are able to help military veterans live more safely and independently in the comfort of their homes. We are so grateful for the Foundation’s long-standing commitment.”

Since the program’s inception, The Home Depot Foundation has invested significantly in improving veteran homes nationwide, leveraging both financial support and skilled volunteer engagement to address critical housing needs.

Through this year’s grant, CICOA will continue expanding its work to ensure that homebound veterans across Central Indiana can remain safely housed, connected to their communities, and supported as they age.
