CICOA Receives $25,000 from Healthcare Initiatives for Home Modifications

CICOA Aging & In-Home Solutions has received a grant of $25,000 from Healthcare Initiatives, Inc., a private granting foundation located in Indianapolis that supports the advancement of human health and well-being.

Funding will provide home safety and accessibility modifications through CICOA’s Safe at Home program to help low-income older adults maintain their health and independence while aging in place in their homes.

“Falls are one of the greatest risks to older adults, and modifications provided by Healthcare Initiatives will have a significant impact on reducing that risk,” said Tauhric Brown, CICOA president and CEO. “CICOA is very appreciative of our partnership with Healthcare Initiatives and their care for vulnerable neighbors who need help at home.”

CICOA’s Safe at Home program assists seniors who own their own homes, live at or below the national poverty level, show signs of aging that impair mobility, and are identified as having home accessibility needs. These economically disadvantaged homeowners are at risk for accidental injury due to limited mobility and/or mental functioning and do not qualify for assistance from any federal or state funds, such as the Medicaid Waiver or Indiana’s CHOICE program.

With funding from Healthcare Initiatives, Inc., materials and labor can be purchased to complete home modifications that improve accessibility and eliminate common hazards. These include installing handrails, bathroom grab bars and comfort height toilets, adding wheelchair ramps, leveling uneven floors, repairing faulty steps, and improving interior and exterior lighting.

CICOA is the only organization in Central Indiana targeting home accessibility modification services for the low-income senior community.

“We thank CICOA for all the work you do in the community. We believe in what you do,” said Haley Gilroy, Executive Director of Healthcare Initiatives, Inc.
