Hendricks County Community Foundation Grant Supports Home Accessibility

CICOA Aging & In-Home Solutions has received a grant of $25,000 from the Raths Family Fund, a fund of the Hendricks County Community Foundation (HCCF) to provide home safety and accessibility modifications for seniors in Hendricks County.

Funding will support CICOA’s Home Safety & Accessibility program, providing home safety and accessibility modifications to help low-income older adults maintain their health and independence while aging in place in their homes. Home modifications enhance mobility, promote independence and prevent falls for older adults and people with disabilities. Seniors can live in their homes longer and avoid possible institutionalization.

“We are thankful for the relationship and partnership in mutual goals that we share with the Hendricks County Community Foundation and their care for our vulnerable neighbors who need help at home,” said Steve Gerber, chief development officer for the CICOA Foundation.

With this funding, materials and labor can be purchased to complete home modifications such as installing stairwell handrails, bathroom grab bars and toilets that meet the height standards of the American Disabilities Act. Modifications also include adding wheelchair ramps, leveling uneven floors, repairing faulty steps, and improving exterior and interior lighting.

“I am so pleased and appreciative for the generous donation from HCCF to help keep those at risk of falls safer in their homes,” said Emily McAndrews, director of the Home Safety & Accessibility program and certified aging-in-place specialist. “Falls are one of the greatest risks to older adults and making small modifications can make a significant impact on reducing the risk of falling. These improvements will definitely make homes safer and allow folks to remain in their homes longer if they choose,” she added.
